5. Brief History Talkatora Bagh and its embankment is situated at the foot of the hill of Delhi Ridge inside Tal Katora Garden. An embankment was constructed here during the reign of Muhammad Shah (1719-48 CE) in the medieval period to protect the water source flowing at the foot of the hill. The literal meaning of Taal is pond and the meaning of Katora is ‘bowl’, which means a bowl-shaped pond. Now most of the remains of its four walls or high embankment have disappeared, but still there is a pavilion with a canopy on each of its corners, in addition to the two arched gates, which are built to drain water from the embankment.
6. Architectural style Its architecture is typical of post-Mughal era carved red sandstone lattices and brackets, The use of balcony and pillar can be seen in the structure. Along with this, distinctive flowery and decorative mouldings are also seen above the arches. An inverted lotus shape has been used on the top part of the pavilions and chhatris, which is the typical feature of the Mughal period.
