The main functions of the Department of Archaeology, Government of NCT of Delhi are as follows:
- Explorations, Architectural surveys, Identification and Detailed documentation of the Monuments and sites of local importance in the State;
- Protection of the monuments and sites of local importance in the State under the provisions of "The Delhi Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 2004;
- Conservation, preservation and maintenance of the State protected monuments and sites;
- Horticulture operations and landscape development in and around the State protected monuments and sites;
- Illumination of the state protected monuments and sites;
- Conducting archaeological explorations and excavations;
- Organization and setting up of Archaeological museums, Theme-based museums, Site museums, Memorabilia Museums etc.;
- Bringing out archaeological and other related publications;
- Conducting cultural, educational and recreational events at the State protected monuments and sites;
- Offering internship and fellowship programmes to students of related fields;
- Encouraging adoption of the State protected monuments by the public/ private sectors for development works in order to increase the tourism potential of the protected sites;
- Implementation and regulation of – The Delhi Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 2004”.
