The Heritage sites and Monuments of Delhi are not only integral in defining the identity of the capital city, but they are also of immense Historical, Archaeological, Architectural, Functional, Economic, Recreational and Educational importance and values to the citizens of Delhi as well as the visitors to the city.

The prime objective of the Department of Archaeology, GNCTD is to protect and conserve the monuments in Delhi that are not administered by the Archaeological Survey of India, Government of India. The Department’s mission is to safeguard these monuments & sites for posterity while maintaining their authenticity and integrity.

The primary activities of the Department include field surveys, identification, documentation, protection, conservation, preservation and environmental development of ancient monuments of historical interest in the capital city, in conformity with the provisions of “The Delhi Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 2004”, (DAHMASR Act 2004); and also, setting up of historical as well as archaeological museums, exhibiting the material culture salvaged from the archaeological explorations and excavations conducted so far.

Notable initiatives are made to involve NGOs, RWAs, PSUs, and the corporate sector in the care and upkeep of monuments, under the overall supervision of the Department of Archaeology in order to develop these sites as significant tourist attractions.
